In 1999, the first Business Opportunities Forum was launched… “BizOps2000”. This has now become a yearly event organized by the Philippine Small and Medium Foundation with different partner institutions. Over the years it has helped many small and medium entrepreneurs expand their network of contacts, find new opportunities to sell their products and services and learn new and exciting trends in the country. Many of the innovative approaches that we have taken up in the Business Opportunity Forums have found their way in to the mainstream practices – the “clustering” concept introduced a few years back has found adherents not only in the private sector but also in the government; building businesses through “Global Alliances” was also another idea that has gained ground among businessmen.  
 
Text Box: The Philippine Small and Medium Business Development Foundation (PHILSMED) launched the first Business Excellence Award for SMEs last November 2004. This award is envisioned to be the equivalent of many prominent national excellence awards that are currently being given such as those for cooperatives (The Gawad Pitak Award), marketing (The Agora Award), exports (The Golden Shell Award), and Tourism (Kalakbay Award). This Business Excellence Award for SMEs is one in a series of steps that will bring into focus small and medium entrepreneurship in the country. The awarding ceremonies provide would-be entrepreneurs with a platform from which to demonstrate their best practices, illustrate their success stories and in general promote a greater shift towards entrepreneurship. PHILSMED’s vision is to elevate the role of SMEs in national development, particularly by increasing its contribution towards our country’s gross domestic product. Every year, the Business Excellence Award for SMEs coincides with the Business Opportunities Forum which are held in the last quarter of the year at a chosen site where key resource speakers from the Philippines and abroad share important information and insights into their respective industries.
